How to Search Passaic County Court Records
The search begins at the NJ Courts Find a Case page. It lists the public databases for civil and foreclosure cases, criminal cases, criminal judgments, judgment liens, Tax Court cases, municipal matters, Supreme Court cases, and court opinions. These are not all one system. You choose the category, then open the right tool. The image below is the official NJ Courts public portal, which is the entry point for several of these searches.
Before you start, line up your details. A party name, a docket number, the case type, and a rough year all help narrow results. For a municipal ticket, you need the ticket number or complaint number. Follow these steps for a Superior Court civil search.
- Open Find a Case and pick the record category you need.
- For civil or foreclosure files, open Civil and Foreclosure Public Access.
- Register as a first-time user, or log in with existing NJ Courts credentials.
- Choose the court and docket type, then enter a party name or docket number.
- Open the case jacket, review the docket entries, and request a copy if needed.

Returning users sign in with eCourts, JEDS, or Municipal Case Resolution credentials. Attorneys use their bar ID. The portal warns that some documents may not appear online and that customary record request steps may be needed for those.
Passaic County Court Records Search Fields
The civil and foreclosure tool asks for login details, then case criteria. The screenshot below is the official Civil and Foreclosure Public Access page, which explains registration and the confidentiality disclaimer. The fields you fill in once inside are listed in the table.

| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes / Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| User ID | Text | Yes (returning) | Existing NJ Courts credentials |
| Court | Dropdown | Yes | Civil Part or General Equity |
| Docket Type | Dropdown | Yes | Civil L, DJ, Chancery C, Foreclosure F |
| County | Dropdown | Likely | Select Passaic |
| Docket Number | Text | No | Exact case lookup |

The page notes that confidential records do not come back in public results. Examples include child-victim sexual abuse cases, trade secrets, and files impounded by a judge.
Types of Passaic County Court Records
The Superior Court produces most of the case files people want. Records split by division, and each division uses its own docket prefix. Some files are open online, while others need a request to the court.
Land records are not court records. The County Clerk holds deeds and mortgages, and those are searched through a separate land records system. Keep that split in mind when you start.
- Civil Law Division suits, Special Civil Part cases, small claims, and landlord-tenant matters.
- Criminal complaints, indictments, accusations, pleas, and judgments of conviction.
- Family cases, including divorce, custody, support, and non-dissolution matters.
- Probate files through the Surrogate and the Chancery Division Probate Part.
- Municipal traffic and ordinance cases through the local courts and NJMCDirect.
What Passaic County Court Records Show
A typical case jacket holds a standard set of fields drawn from the Judiciary's computer records. The docket number, caption, filing date, and disposition give you the core facts. Docket entries trace the case event by event. The table lists the main fields you will see.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Case / Docket Number | Shown in docket-type format, such as L, DJ, C, or F |
| Court / Division | Civil Part, General Equity, Foreclosure, or Special Civil |
| County | Vicinage such as Passaic |
| Case Caption | Party names |
| Filing Date | Date the case was filed |
| Disposition | Outcome and disposition date |
| Docket Entries | Filings, orders, motions, notices, and judgments |
Note: A statewide lien field may show Yes or No, and a Yes can link to related judgment information in the case jacket.
Public Access Framework for Passaic County Court Records
Court records in New Jersey are governed mainly by Court Rule 1:38, not by OPRA alone. Rule 1:38 sets a presumption that court records are open unless a statute, court rule, or court order restricts them. The Open Public Records Act, found at N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1, applies to county and local agency records, such as a Sheriff or County Clerk file, through the right custodian.
Anyone can search the public databases. Some searches require free registration first. Confidential personal identifiers, such as Social Security numbers and driver license numbers, must be kept out of public filings under Rule 1:38-7. For closed files or copies not visible online, use the Judiciary's record request process or contact the Passaic Vicinage division that holds the case.
Records That Are Sealed or Confidential in Passaic County
Rule 1:38 lists records kept from public access. These include juvenile delinquency, adoption, child abuse and neglect, civil commitment, and guardianship reports. Domestic violence victim information is protected, and grand jury records are generally secret. Expunged criminal records are removed from public access under N.J.S.A. 2C:52-1.
To view a sealed file, a person usually files a motion under Rule 1:38-11 and shows good cause to a Superior Court judge. The court weighs the risk of serious harm against the public's right to access. For expunged records, inspection is allowed only by court order on a showing of compelling need.
Reading Passaic County Docket Numbers
New Jersey docket numbers carry meaning. The letter prefix tells you the case category before you read a word of the file. That makes the prefix the single fastest way to sort a search result. The list below covers the prefixes you will meet most in Passaic County court records.
- L - Civil Law Division cases above the Special Civil threshold.
- DC, LT, SC - Special Civil, landlord-tenant, and small claims.
- F - foreclosure cases in the Chancery Division.
- C - Chancery and general equity matters.
- FM - divorce and other matrimonial cases.
Criminal matters use complaint, accusation, and indictment numbers rather than a single letter prefix. Family cases beyond divorce use a range of FD, FV, FG, and similar codes, and many of those files are confidential.
Getting Copies of Passaic County Court Records
Online access lets you read a case jacket, but a printed online page is not a certified copy. Courts, employers, and other agencies often want a certified copy with an official seal. Only the court can issue one. Plain copies cost less than certified copies, and fees are charged per page.
For Superior Court files, request copies through the Judiciary record process or the Clerk's Office. For municipal cases, contact the municipal court named on the ticket or complaint. Closed files may sit at the Superior Court Records Center, so older cases can take longer to pull. Build in time when a deadline is near.
In-Person Court Record Requests
When a record is not online, you can request it through the court. Closed Superior Court files transfer to the Superior Court Records Center, and the Judiciary directs the public to the Clerk's Office for those. Bring case details and be ready to pay copy fees.
